Watermelon Snow, Chaney Glacier, Glacier National Park, Montana, 2013
from The Last Glacier series www.thelastgalcier.com
This is one of my favorite images from our 2013 GNP expedition. Watermelon snow is caused by an algae growing in the snow. We encountered a lot this year, but this was definitely one of the redder areas we found. The print looks very pink, as if it is not color corrected at all, but this is really the color of the snow. Apparently it is not a good idea to eat the stuff as it is somewhat toxic on the stomach and causes diarrhea.
